If you’ve spent years chasing a lower number on the scale, you aren’t alone. Most of the fitness industry is designed to make you want to be “less” – taking up less space, weighing less, and eating less.
But in FireTiger Fitness coaching, we work on a different priority. I’m not interested in just making you lighter; I’m interested in making you stronger.
When we obsess over weight loss, we often ignore what that weight actually is. Your body is a mix of bone, water, fat, and muscle. If you lose weight through a crash diet or a “quick fix,” you aren’t just losing body fat. You are often losing your muscle (bone mass, ligament and tendon density too) – the very thing(s) that keeps you mobile, protects your bones, and keeps your metabolism active. It really isn’t worth it in the long run.
Understanding why muscle matters is the first step toward lasting health.
Looking after your “Longevity Insurance”
Think of your muscle as your body’s longevity insurance. It’s what supports your joints and keeps you resilient as you age. For women especially, muscle matters for our long-term health, especially as we navigate and adjust to hormonal shifts.
Beyond just keeping you moving, muscle is essentially the engine of your metabolism. For women, this is particularly important for managing our hormones and energy. Muscle tissue is “metabolically active,” meaning it burns more energy even when you’re resting. But more importantly, it acts like a sponge for blood sugar (glucose). By building and protecting your muscle, you help your body manage insulin levels more effectively, which is key for stable energy and sustainable fat loss. As our hormone levels shift – especially during perimenopause and menopause – muscle becomes our best tool for keeping our metabolism firing and our energy levels consistent.
To change how your clothes fit or how you feel in your own skin, we need to focus on what we call body recomposition. This isn’t about the scale; it’s about the balance of muscle and fat.
To do this effectively, we focus on the big rocks:
- Fuelling for what you’re asking your body to do: No restrictive diets or cutting out food groups. It’s about eating a nutrient-dense, balanced diet with enough protein to give your body the building blocks it needs to recover
- Effective, realistic training: This doesn’t mean moving into the gym. For the majority of my clients, one coached session a week is where we build the skill and confidence. Adding one simple session at home is often all it takes to see real, physical progress
Why Muscle Matters in the world of “Quick Fixes”
We can’t ignore the massive rise in weight-loss injections (GLP-1s) right now. While they are often sold as a miracle, the research is clear on the reality:
Without intentional strength training and a focus on protein, a significant amount of the weight lost on these medications comes from muscle tissue, not just fat. You might be smaller, but you are also becoming weaker.
Crucially, the data shows that when people stop the medication, the weight often comes piling back on unless their exercise and nutrition and have fundamentally changed.
The injection might suppress your appetite, but it won’t lift the weights for you. It won’t build the bone density or the strength you need for the future. Now is the time to invest your money in your long-term health rather than a temporary fix. Because at the end of the day, muscle matters more than a temporary drop on the scale.
The Bottom Line
You deserve to move with ease and have the energy to enjoy your life. That doesn’t come from being “light.” It comes from looking after your muscle and eating well to fuel your day.
We aren’t trying to make you a smaller version of yourself. We are working to make you the strongest version.
